Sue Skidmore, Artist Statement

As an adolescent, I drew and painted, completed Level 1 Art for my HSC and wanted to be a graphic artist or art teacher, however, I was channeled into another career. Fast forward 40 years after raising a family and dabbling in some pen and ink drawings for greeting cards and designing logos for newspapers, I participated in weekly art classes with David Mason, a local artist in Orange, and began painting again, particularly for my grandchildren. Retirement and a move to Lemon Tree Passage, gave me the time and provided more inspiration to resume painting.

My art has been influenced by my love of both Impressionists and Fauvists’ paintings and can generally be described as representational with enhancements of strong, vibrant colours. I am not a spontaneous artist but prefer to build up the detail in my paintings. The images of Frederick McCubbin and use of colour by Richard Rogers have also had an impact on my style.

I often get inspiration from nature and I particularly love painting Australian flora and fauna, seascapes and landscapes, although I will paint most subjects. I generally paint in two mediums, acrylics and oils, and occasionally paint with a palette knife.
