Brief description of workshop:

This workshop has been designed to start at the beginning of your journey into watercolour painting. The workshop will cover:

  • Different watercolour papers
  • How to “stretch” watercolour paper
  • The different types of watercolour paint
  • A number of background techniques
  • Just a little colour theory
  • Complete a simple abstract using primary colours and wet-in-wet technique
  • Drawing and painting a gum leaf and gumnuts
  • Completing the painting of poppies in the colours of your choice.

Supplied:

  • Watercolour paper for all projects and incidentals
  • A full and complete set of notes with a number of patterns included to help you with carrying on your watercolour painting at home.

List of requirements:

  • Apron or paint shirt
  • Lead pencil
  • Notebook
  • Pencil rubber
  • Blue painter’s tape (from hardware) or good masking tape
  • Roll of paper towel
  • Water jar, not too small
  • Clean sponge similar to what you would wash the car with (half that size is fine)
  • Any brushes or watercolour paints you own (no oils). Brushes needed are a minimum of a round taklon minimum size #5 and 1 liner brush.
  • A white palette (a white plate will do the job)
  • Towel to protect the table.
  • Your Lunch and drink
  • A backing board- this is essential

The board should be made out of ply or MDF and be painted with 2-3 coats of varnish.  The varnish stops the water swelling the timber. The board must be larger by a minimum of 2cm than the A4 sheet of paper you will be using. If you can obtain two backing boards it could make it easier for practice as it is not ideal to hurry up the drying of the paper with a hairdryer.
